Steve Lawes/Stevedrawes

Artist/Poet from Essex, UK. Artworks are mainly made using pen, pencil, ink, paint, collage and graphic design.

Steve’s influences include Medieval History, Shamanism, Mysticism, symbolism and altered states of consciousness. The work draws on a plethora of idea from various global religious traditions and techniques of thought, mirrored against the traditions and cultural bases of Western civilization, to reveal shared experiential knowledge, mental states, rituals and practices.

Steve is an exhibiting member of The Tunnel, a London-based art collective, putting on DIY exhibitions responding to literary themes.

He is a poet and social commentator, and his poem The Gascoigne Estate earned him a place in the finals of the inaugural Koreo Prize, a nationwide competition seeking to find novel critiques and solutions for major social issues. Steve added to the piece and created a multi-disciplinary take on the current London housing crises as eventually awarded a Runner-Up position.

He has also featured on Poetry Booth Sessions by Poetic Impact in 2018, a Youtube platform for upcoming poets across London and Essex, as well as being commissioned to write a Spoken Word Map of Grays as part of Artem et Populis’ Grays+Me project in 2019.

Steve is a founding member of the Thurrock Arts Collective, a group who run workshops and live painting and music events dedicated to nurturing creativity in the South Essex area.
